[Welcome Chloe Jacobs, Author Of Greta And The Goblin King! Guest Post and Giveaway]

Today Chloe Jacobs is taking over the blog and sharing some pretty creepy places with us.  She wrote this book called Greta and the Goblin King, which has a ton of things that I love in it.  Fairytale retellings (including Labyrinth and Hansel and Gretal) a kick ass lead and creepy creatures.  Sounds like the perfect thing to get us all in the Halloween mood, if you ask me!  So, you wanna know about the book?  Here are the details...

While trying to save her brother from a witch’s fire four years ago, Greta was thrown in herself, falling through a portal to Mylena, a dangerous world where humans are the enemy and every ogre, ghoul, and goblin has a dark side that comes out with the eclipse.

To survive, Greta has hidden her humanity and taken the job of bounty hunter—and she’s good at what she does. So good, she’s caught the attention of Mylena’s young goblin king, the darkly enticing Isaac, who invades her dreams and undermines her will to escape.

But Greta’s not the only one looking to get out of Mylena. An ancient evil knows she’s the key to opening the portal, and with the next eclipse mere days away, every bloodthirsty creature in the realm is after her—including Isaac. If Greta fails, she and the lost boys of Mylena will die. If she succeeds, no world will be safe from what follows her back...

And Now I'll Hand Things Over To Chloe!

So, I know this bounty hunter. She’s pretty bad ass and she’s got a habit of getting stuck in some crazy, unfortunate places.

Her name is Greta, and currently she’s cooling her heels in a twisted little world of ice and snow and monsters called Mylena.

After four years there, trekking across the hardest and most brutal terrain to be found in any world, you’d think that Greta wouldn’t be afraid of anything or any place, right?

Well…

FIVE PLACES GRETA WOULDN’T BE CAUGHT DEAD IN

 5.  Waverly Hills Sanitorium – Greta’s not a big believer in ghosts, but she’s seen too many things to completely discount the possibility that they exist, and apparently this place saw tens of thousands of deaths while in operation as a medical facility. Some people say that satanic rituals have taken place there. I don’t know about you, but a haunted insane asylum in any world would be on the top of my list of places to avoid.

4.  That underground research facility from Resident Evil – Like Greta, Alice was totally kick ass, but I’m sure she never wanted to be stuck down there with those undead zombie hive freaks. Turn and run the other way if you can!

3.  Island of the Dolls, New Mexico – Have you heard of this place? There’s nothing like coming across an island covered in doll parts hanging from the trees. Their severed limbs, decapitated heads, and roll-back eyes are everywhere, and they would only remind Greta of all the children who have been taken by the Lamia (a witch in Mylena who hunts children to eat them). This place would freak her out completely. The dolls all seem to be watching, waiting, and at night they’re even creepier. The story is that the island’s only inhabitant found the body of a dead girl and a floating doll, so he hung the doll in a tree to appease her spirit. But one doll became hundreds, and they are all still there.

2.  Frankenstein’s Castle – Imagine an entire village worth of people racing toward you with pitch forks and burning torches, determined to end you just because you’re different and they’re scared of what they don’t understand. This is how Greta feels every day in Mylena. Luckily, she just hasn’t gotten herself trapped in that castle yet with no way out.

1.  Any place that smells like gingerbread – A delicious house made of candy set against a backdrop of a tranquil forest retreat? A little cave cut out of the rock in a beautiful forest? Neither of these may seem like anyone else’s worst nightmare, but Greta lost everything when she was lured into the woods by the sweet, delicious scent of gingerbread and found herself face to face with a child-eating witch who hurled her into a raging bonfire that dumped her into an alternate reality from which there is no escape. Now her life is in danger every minute. Every single creature transforms into a monster under the full moon and will rip her to shreds without a thought…

You’d probably feel the same way.

So, what are the scariest places you can think of? Real or imagined?

And thank you!!  I’m so honoured to be invited as a guest on Christianna’s blog! I LOVE it here and wish I could stay forever!

[Guest Post: Jess From Read My Breath Away Shares Her Top Scary Children Flicks]

Jess here! I usually blog over at Read My Breath Away, but Christianna has taken over my blog for the day to talk about her fave horror movies! So in return, I'm excited to be here today to chat about scary movies! Though, in my case, they're not that scary. Confession time: I'm a huge wimp. Huge. I do not do scary. I watched Signs (which totally isn't even scary) in class in middle school and I couldn't look at a dark tv for weeks. It's bad.

So, since I have nothing to contribute to the horror discussion, I thought I'd go with something much tamer.

I present to you, the movies (or scenes in movies) that scared me as a kid. Warning, some of these are going to make me look super pathetic. I am aware. I was a scaredy-cat kid, okay?

The Creepy:

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (the 1971 version).

This trippy tunnel boat ride was undoubtedly one of the creepiest scenes from my childhood. Where did the lights come from? Were we all supposed to be seasick? If not, what the heck kind of drugs were involved in the making of this scene? Was Willy Wonka just a lunatic? Why the heck were there images of giant chickens floating around? These are the questions that haunt me.

Dumbo:

This scene is the "Pink Elephants on Parade" scene, but has been dubbed the "Pink Elephant Hallucination." Does that even remotely sound like it should belong in a kid's movie? We went from adorable baby Dumbo to that. Who in their right mind thought that was a good idea!? I mean... look!

The Shocking:

The Little Mermaid

I so did not see this scene coming. I wanted mermaids. Pretty, happy, loving mermaids. But then we got to this scene and I was scarred:
Terrifying.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs:

This one should be pretty self-explanatory, especially for a child who was afraid of the dark. Look at the pure terror on her face!

Excuse me while I NEVER ENTER A FOREST AGAIN IN MY LIFE.

The Flat-Out Frightening:

The Brave Little Toaster

The air conditioner in this movie is not only a sentient being like all the other appliances, it also gets so mentally unstable that it literally freaks out, overheats, short-circuits and practically blows itself up. That was genuinely terrifying to my little, innocent mind, especially because they were really rather graphic with it, for a kid's cartoon. But then, later on in the movie this happened:

JUST YOU TRY TO FIND ME A MORE SCARRING IMAGE IN A CHILDREN'S MOVIE. I DARE YOU.

When I think about, it's kind of surprising I turned out as stable as I did, considering this nonsense. Oh well. Thanks, Christianna, for having me!

Do you guys remember any traumatic scenes from movies you saw as a kid?

[Blog Tour: Unhinged by A.G. Howard / Guest Post / Giveaway]

I'm super excited to be a part of Rockstar Book Tours and Amulet Book blog tour for A.G. Howard's newest Wonderland adventure.  A.G. is a class lady and a fantastic author and it's a pleasure to host her and her new book "Unhinged" today.  As a fan of The Moth himself, I'm also stoked for this post!  So get ready for the details people!

Summary:

Alyssa Gardner has been down the rabbit hole and faced the bandersnatch. She saved the life of Jeb, the guy she loves, and escaped the machinations of the disturbingly seductive Morpheus and the vindictive Queen Red. Now all she has to do is graduate high school and make it through prom so she can attend the prestigious art school in London she's always dreamed of.

That would be easier without her mother, freshly released from an asylum, acting overly protective and suspicious. And it would be much simpler if the mysterious Morpheus didn’t show up for school one day to tempt her with another dangerous quest in the dark, challenging Wonderland—where she (partly) belongs.

As prom and graduation creep closer, Alyssa juggles Morpheus’s unsettling presence in her real world with trying to tell Jeb the truth about a past he’s forgotten. Glimpses of Wonderland start to bleed through her art and into her world in very disturbing ways, and Morpheus warns that Queen Red won’t be far behind.

If Alyssa stays in the human realm, she could endanger Jeb, her parents, and everyone she loves. But if she steps through the rabbit hole again, she'll face a deadly battle that could cost more than just her head.

About The Author:

A.G. Howard was inspired to write SPLINTERED while working at a school library. She always wondered what would've happened had the subtle creepiness of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland taken center stage, and she hopes her darker and funkier tribute to Carroll will inspire readers to seek out the stories that won her heart as a child.

When she's not writing, A.G.'s pastimes are reading, rollerblading, gardening, and family vacations which often include impromptu side trips to 18th century graveyards or condemned schoolhouses to appease her overactive muse.

Guest Post:

Welcome to the third stop!

Today’s post, and the remaining nine that follow, will be celebrating one of fall’s most anticipated nights: Halloween.

To kick off the thrills and chills, Morpheus dropped off a creepy excerpt from Unhinged to share with you. If you’re Coulrophobic, you might want to grab your blanky. And if you’re not, at least you’ll know what the term means by the end of this post.

*****
Sunlight dapples the floor through the hopper window, but the bathroom is gray and still. Today the bugs have been relentless in their whispers, as if the cricket from last night is leading them on a revolt:

They’re here, Alyssa. They don’t belong . . . send them back.

I lean against the sink. “Who?” I whisper aloud, frustrated with the obscure warnings.
As I’m waiting for a response, I hear a rustle inside one of the half-closed stalls. I inhale a startled breath and lean down to look under the metal door, careful not to let my hair touch the damp floor.

“Is someone there?”

No answer. Steeling myself, I swing the door open.

A gurgling hiss greets me along with the distorted face of the clown. It’s toy size again and standing on the toilet lid. I screech and stumble back, tripping over my backpack. My elbow knocks the paper towel dispenser open. Squares of brown paper flutter down all around me.

Hopping to the floor, the demented toy scurries after me, razor-sharp teeth bared and snapping. One of its shoes slips on the paper towels and it falls. It crawls toward me instead, never slowing. Heart pounding, I look around for something to use as a weapon—to protect myself from that snarling mouth…

[Blog Tour: Always Remember by Emma Hart. Review/Guest Post/Giveaway]

When I had the chance to hop on the blog tour for Always Remember, I knew that I had to take it.  I've been reading the Memories series by my author pal Emma Hart and this is it's conclusion.  Jen and Bing (I mean Samuel) are my two favorite characters in the series, so I was excited to see that this is their love story.  I was excited to see what ended up happening between them.  Let's get on to the book, shall we?

Author: Emma Hart
Series: Memories #2
Pages: ?
Genre: Mature YA, NA, Contemporary
Date Published: May 13th, 2013
Publisher: Self Published
Format Read: eARC provided by author for honest review

-----------------------------------------------------------
Summary:

How long does it take for a long-distance relationship to break down? Sixteen months.
When Jen and Carl put their relationship to rest after Christmas, Jen’s biggest problem is going back to London ten days earlier than planned – and her ever-present attraction to Samuel ‘Bing’ Edwards.
Bing has no idea why Jen left Devon so fast. All he knows is that he wants her as much as he did the first day he laid eyes on her – so spending time with her while Lexy is still in Devon isn’t exactly a hardship for him. When he finds out she’s single, the only thing on his mind is finishing what they started at his dad’s fiftieth birthday party.
Feelings that have been a long time building between the two explode, and they both find themselves sucked into an easy yet passionate relationship, with Bing determined to prove to Jen that she’s it for him. That she is The One.
But in a city like London, the odds are stacked against them, and there’s always that one person ready to stir things up… And Jen doesn’t know how much of that she can take – even for the guy she loves more deeply than she ever imagined, and eventually she breaks.
Bing isn’t down with that. He wants Jen, and he wants her by his side for good.

Jennifer Mason must learn that Samuel Edwards doesn’t do giving up. Especially not when his forever girl is involved.

My Thoughts:

I was excited to dig into Always Remember, primarily because it was going to be all about Jen and Bing.  They have been some of my favorite characters in this series ever since Never Forget and I was so excited to see what Emma Hart had in store for these two.

These kids are two of the snarkiest and funniest/rudest people out there.  There is something completely hilarious about how Jen and Bing interact that will always put a smile on my face.  They both swear like sailors and they both are complete wrecks, but that, oddly is a large part of their charm.  I just love watching these two do their thing.  Add in some familiar faces from the other two books in the series and you get to watch them interact with even more people.  Which is always a good time!

I do feel like the conflict that was brought up in this book wasn't extremely strong.  It tried to be, but it just didn't stand out to me.  I didn't know what I thought the conflict would be, but I thought it would be more than a bleach blonde who is still hung up on Bing.  Hart had such a touching conflict in her first novel and female getting in the way of Jen and Bing just didn't really cut it for me.

I will state right here that this book is the steamiest out of all of the Memories series.  Meaning that it's pretty dang steamy.  In a way I thought that it might have focused on the sex a little too much.  Yes the sex filled banter is funny between Bing and Jen, but it's the moments when that isn't really in the forefront that these characters shine.

I won't tell you what happens in the end, but I thought that it was perfect for the story and I liked how Granny snuck back in to the story, even if it was in a little way.  All in all this was a great way to end a fun NA series!

Rating:
3 Unicorns = I liked it a lot but it had it's issues!

Guest Post With Emma Hart About Her Favorite British Things!

  1. Fish and chips. You’ve never had it until you’ve had it from a chip shop and eaten it on the seafront. Blackpool is the best place for that!
  2. Stick of rock. For those of you not familiar with the wonderful thing that is a stick of rock – it’s a hard candy that comes in bright colours and patterns, and also has words running through the middle of the stick. It’s a seaside thing, and they usually have the place name in the middle!
  3. Roast dinner. British roast dinners win hands down. Nowhere does them like we do. And we have…
  4. Yorkshire pudding. It’s not actually a pudding, but something so yum it should have its own spot. It goes with a roast dinner, so if you don’t know it, go and Google a recipe and MAKE IT IMMEDIATELY.
  5. London. I’ve only been once – something I hope to rectify soon – but thanks to a wrong turn we ended up travelling through the city center and I loved it.
  6. “Bloody hell!” – as in the saying. I say it way too much…
  7. The weather. Because when all else fails, we Brits love to discuss the weather.

[Blog Tour: The S-Word by Chelsea Pitcher, Guest Post And Giveaway]

I was excited to get a spot on the blog tour for this book and working with Chelsea on the guest post was delightful.  She's really a stand up gal and I can't wait to actually get my hands on a copy of this book!  It sounds like it's going to have such an impact and I love books like that.  Plus, we both have a love for the musical called RENT and a dude named Angel!

Author: Chelsea Pitcher
Release Date: May 7th, 2013
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
Buy Here: Amazon

---------------------------------------------------------------
Summary:

First it was SLUT scribbled all over Lizzie Hart’s locker.

But one week after Lizzie kills herself, SUICIDE SLUT replaces it—in Lizzie's looping scrawl.

Lizzie’s reputation is destroyed when she's caught in bed with her best friend’s boyfriend on prom night. With the whole school turned against her, and Angie not speaking to her, Lizzie takes her own life. But someone isn’t letting her go quietly. As graffiti and photocopies of Lizzie’s diary plaster the school, Angie begins a relentless investigation into who, exactly, made Lizzie feel she didn’t deserve to keep living. And while she claims she simply wants to punish Lizzie’s tormentors, Angie's own anguish over abandoning her best friend will drive her deep into the dark, twisted side of Verity High—and she might not be able to pull herself back out.

Debut author Chelsea Pitcher daringly depicts the harsh reality of modern high schools, where one bad decision can ruin a reputation, and one cruel word can ruin a life. Angie’s quest for the truth behind Lizzie’s suicide is addictive and thrilling, and her razor-sharp wit and fierce sleuthing skills makes her impossible not to root for—even when it becomes clear that both avenging Lizzie and avoiding self-destruction might not be possible.

GUEST POST: OUTCAST CHARACTERS:

When Christianna asked me to do a post about my favorite outcast characters, I was thrilled. Outcasts are the best! Who among us can’t relate to feeling ostracized and alienated? The hardest part was picking my favorites out of so many wonderful choices. In the end, I tried to focus on the ones that greatly affected my life. The ones that changed me, shaped me. Maybe even saved me. So, without further ado, I present to you: Chelsea’s List of the Greatest Outcast Characters Ever:

1. Darlene Conner from “Roseanne”:

I’ll be honest: Darlene was pretty much my idol in middle school. She was dark, sarcastic, and genuinely didn’t care what anyone thought about her. The really interesting thing about Darlene is that she was an outcast by choice. Of course, once she crossed paths with another curly-haired outcast (a.k.a. David), things really got AWESOME.

2. Rickie Vasquez from “My So-Called Life”:

Rickie is so sweet, it hurts to watch people be cruel to him. But they do, simply because of his sexuality and his shaky family situation. Lucky for him, he finds a couple of super cool girls to keep him company. We’re never truly outcasts if we have friends.

3. Witch Baby from Francesca Lia Block’s “Dangerous Angels”:

Witch Baby is the quintessential outcast: she doesn’t even feel like she belongs in her own family. And after she falls in love with someone who loves her back, she still struggles to feel like part of a community. I think Witch Baby is so relatable because, even in a room filled with people, it’s alarmingly easy to still feel alone.

4. Corny from Holly Black’s “Tithe”:

Corny is funny, quirky, and a little too attracted to the dark side. His appeal lies in his rejection of normalcy. Who wants to be ordinary, when you can be a weirdo chasing after faeries? (And hanging out with them.) Corny’s a cool cat.

5. Veronica Mars:

Who wouldn’t love Veronica Mars? She’s sassy, feisty, cute as a button and sharp as a tack. But none of that seems to matter to the kids at Neptune High. They’re much too busy judging her for her parents’ decisions, and making up rumors that aren’t true. Who couldn’t relate to that?

6. Angel from RENT:

I’ll tell you a secret: when I started crafting Jesse’s character in “The S-Word,” Angel was my inspiration. I wanted someone whose indomitable sweetness could infuse my story with light. But much like Angel, who tricks us into thinking he’s a supporting character before taking center stage, Jesse revealed himself to be much more than I expected: a leading man with a rich history and plenty of secrets. An outcast we can root for.

The wonderful thing about outcasts is they make us feel connected in an otherwise alienating world. We see why they’re wonderful, even if the people in their lives don’t get it. We can see their worth. They’re the best! And in this way, they allow us to see our own worth, even if those around us are judgmental. It gives us hope that we’ll find the community we deserve.
