[Interview and Giveaway: The Cure for Dreaming by Cat Winters]

It's no surprise that I adored The Cure for Dreaming to pieces, and that there is no other book that I would rather promote on Halloween this year. Lucky for us, Cat Winter's agreed to do an interview and her answers will make you want to pick this book up ASAP.

Throw in the fact that I gave the book a 5 unicorn review (which you can read HERE) and you know it's a good one. In fact, I haven't seen a review lower than 4 stars anywhere, so far.

If you like vampires and classic horror novels and women's rights and dreamy hypnotists, then this is the book for you, because it has all of that. It also has awesome quotes and vintage pictures that add a special touch when needed.

So, let's get on with the interview, shall we?!

Question 1: What made you choose Dracula as the classic monster story you incorporated into The Cure for Dreaming?

Cat's Answer: During the major TWILIGHT craze, an idea popped into my head: Wouldn't it be fun to one day write a story about teens reacting to the publication of DRACULA when it was a brand-new novel? I tucked that idea into the files of my mind. When I started writing THE CURE FOR DREAMING, I originally set the book in the early 1880s and used older vampire novels as the source of Olivia's hypnosis visions. However, I've always been drawn more to the latter part of the Victorian era, so I realized I would enjoy writing the book more if I set the book in 1900. DRACULA was first published in the U.S. in 1899, so my protagonist, Olivia, turned into a major fan of Stoker's novel--a novel that follows her into her hypnotized state.

Question 2 Adding magic and hypnotism into the plot made things really interesting. Did you ever think that you'd use a different profession for Henri, or was he always a hypnotist?

Cat's Answer: The book originally started with the idea of writing about a Victorian hypnotist, so that was always his profession. Three years ago I felt inspired to write something theatrical and Victorian, with a touch of Gothic horror. Erin Morgensern's THE NIGHT CIRCUS, a novel about fictional Victorian magicians, was a major new release at a time, so I didn't necessarily want to write about a magician. My mind instead veered to the idea of a stage hypnotist, and eighteen-year-old hypnotist extraordinaire Henri Reverie was born.

Question 3: What made you want to write a novel about woman's rights in Portland?

Cat's Answer: I've been interested in the women's suffrage movement ever since I saw the HBO movie IRON JAWED ANGELS, which chronicles the struggles of real-life U.S. historical figures such as Alice Paul and Lucy Burns, who were active suffragists during the years leading up to the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment. These women underwent arrests, hunger strikes, and force-feedings, all so women of the future--women like myself--would be given the right to vote. Their fight for equality deeply moved me.

I set the book in Portland, both because I live here and because the fight for suffrage in the state was such a frustrating one.  A measure giving women the right to vote appeared on ballots in 1884, 1900, 1906, 1908, and 1910, but it didn't pass until 1911. That's a long and bumpy road to equality. I chose 1900 for the setting of THE CURE FOR DREAMING specifically because it was one of the years that saw the failure of the referendum.

Question 4 Olivia sees the world as it is and yet magical realism is a huge tool in the plot, can you explain why you choose to add that into the mix?
Cat's Answer: I wanted the hypnosis to have a little twist to it. It would be extremely depressing to read about a man who wants to remove the rebellion out of his daughter's head . . . and to have the hypnosis actually work the way he wants. Henri tells Olivia she will see the world the way it truly is and that the roles of men and women will be clearer than they have ever been before. The results dip into magic realism: Olivia often sees glimpses of people's true natures, and sometimes even settings change before her eyes. My editor suggested that Olivia doesn't always see people and places for the way they truly are, and I agreed. It's more unsettling to suddenly become knocked off balance with a supernatural vision. I won't reveal why Henri gives Olivia this "gift" of seeing the true nature of things and whether it's more harmful or helpful, but I will say I thoroughly enjoyed venturing into the realm of a realistic fantasy. You'll see more of that technique in some of my future works.

[Welcome Chloe Jacobs, Author Of Greta And The Goblin King! Guest Post and Giveaway]

Today Chloe Jacobs is taking over the blog and sharing some pretty creepy places with us.  She wrote this book called Greta and the Goblin King, which has a ton of things that I love in it.  Fairytale retellings (including Labyrinth and Hansel and Gretal) a kick ass lead and creepy creatures.  Sounds like the perfect thing to get us all in the Halloween mood, if you ask me!  So, you wanna know about the book?  Here are the details...

While trying to save her brother from a witch’s fire four years ago, Greta was thrown in herself, falling through a portal to Mylena, a dangerous world where humans are the enemy and every ogre, ghoul, and goblin has a dark side that comes out with the eclipse.

To survive, Greta has hidden her humanity and taken the job of bounty hunter—and she’s good at what she does. So good, she’s caught the attention of Mylena’s young goblin king, the darkly enticing Isaac, who invades her dreams and undermines her will to escape.

But Greta’s not the only one looking to get out of Mylena. An ancient evil knows she’s the key to opening the portal, and with the next eclipse mere days away, every bloodthirsty creature in the realm is after her—including Isaac. If Greta fails, she and the lost boys of Mylena will die. If she succeeds, no world will be safe from what follows her back...

And Now I'll Hand Things Over To Chloe!

So, I know this bounty hunter. She’s pretty bad ass and she’s got a habit of getting stuck in some crazy, unfortunate places.

Her name is Greta, and currently she’s cooling her heels in a twisted little world of ice and snow and monsters called Mylena.

After four years there, trekking across the hardest and most brutal terrain to be found in any world, you’d think that Greta wouldn’t be afraid of anything or any place, right?

Well…

FIVE PLACES GRETA WOULDN’T BE CAUGHT DEAD IN

 5.  Waverly Hills Sanitorium – Greta’s not a big believer in ghosts, but she’s seen too many things to completely discount the possibility that they exist, and apparently this place saw tens of thousands of deaths while in operation as a medical facility. Some people say that satanic rituals have taken place there. I don’t know about you, but a haunted insane asylum in any world would be on the top of my list of places to avoid.

4.  That underground research facility from Resident Evil – Like Greta, Alice was totally kick ass, but I’m sure she never wanted to be stuck down there with those undead zombie hive freaks. Turn and run the other way if you can!

3.  Island of the Dolls, New Mexico – Have you heard of this place? There’s nothing like coming across an island covered in doll parts hanging from the trees. Their severed limbs, decapitated heads, and roll-back eyes are everywhere, and they would only remind Greta of all the children who have been taken by the Lamia (a witch in Mylena who hunts children to eat them). This place would freak her out completely. The dolls all seem to be watching, waiting, and at night they’re even creepier. The story is that the island’s only inhabitant found the body of a dead girl and a floating doll, so he hung the doll in a tree to appease her spirit. But one doll became hundreds, and they are all still there.

2.  Frankenstein’s Castle – Imagine an entire village worth of people racing toward you with pitch forks and burning torches, determined to end you just because you’re different and they’re scared of what they don’t understand. This is how Greta feels every day in Mylena. Luckily, she just hasn’t gotten herself trapped in that castle yet with no way out.

1.  Any place that smells like gingerbread – A delicious house made of candy set against a backdrop of a tranquil forest retreat? A little cave cut out of the rock in a beautiful forest? Neither of these may seem like anyone else’s worst nightmare, but Greta lost everything when she was lured into the woods by the sweet, delicious scent of gingerbread and found herself face to face with a child-eating witch who hurled her into a raging bonfire that dumped her into an alternate reality from which there is no escape. Now her life is in danger every minute. Every single creature transforms into a monster under the full moon and will rip her to shreds without a thought…

You’d probably feel the same way.

So, what are the scariest places you can think of? Real or imagined?

And thank you!!  I’m so honoured to be invited as a guest on Christianna’s blog! I LOVE it here and wish I could stay forever!

[Blog Tour: Unhinged by A.G. Howard / Guest Post / Giveaway]

I'm super excited to be a part of Rockstar Book Tours and Amulet Book blog tour for A.G. Howard's newest Wonderland adventure.  A.G. is a class lady and a fantastic author and it's a pleasure to host her and her new book "Unhinged" today.  As a fan of The Moth himself, I'm also stoked for this post!  So get ready for the details people!

Summary:

Alyssa Gardner has been down the rabbit hole and faced the bandersnatch. She saved the life of Jeb, the guy she loves, and escaped the machinations of the disturbingly seductive Morpheus and the vindictive Queen Red. Now all she has to do is graduate high school and make it through prom so she can attend the prestigious art school in London she's always dreamed of.

That would be easier without her mother, freshly released from an asylum, acting overly protective and suspicious. And it would be much simpler if the mysterious Morpheus didn’t show up for school one day to tempt her with another dangerous quest in the dark, challenging Wonderland—where she (partly) belongs.

As prom and graduation creep closer, Alyssa juggles Morpheus’s unsettling presence in her real world with trying to tell Jeb the truth about a past he’s forgotten. Glimpses of Wonderland start to bleed through her art and into her world in very disturbing ways, and Morpheus warns that Queen Red won’t be far behind.

If Alyssa stays in the human realm, she could endanger Jeb, her parents, and everyone she loves. But if she steps through the rabbit hole again, she'll face a deadly battle that could cost more than just her head.

About The Author:

A.G. Howard was inspired to write SPLINTERED while working at a school library. She always wondered what would've happened had the subtle creepiness of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland taken center stage, and she hopes her darker and funkier tribute to Carroll will inspire readers to seek out the stories that won her heart as a child.

When she's not writing, A.G.'s pastimes are reading, rollerblading, gardening, and family vacations which often include impromptu side trips to 18th century graveyards or condemned schoolhouses to appease her overactive muse.

Guest Post:

Welcome to the third stop!

Today’s post, and the remaining nine that follow, will be celebrating one of fall’s most anticipated nights: Halloween.

To kick off the thrills and chills, Morpheus dropped off a creepy excerpt from Unhinged to share with you. If you’re Coulrophobic, you might want to grab your blanky. And if you’re not, at least you’ll know what the term means by the end of this post.

*****
Sunlight dapples the floor through the hopper window, but the bathroom is gray and still. Today the bugs have been relentless in their whispers, as if the cricket from last night is leading them on a revolt:

They’re here, Alyssa. They don’t belong . . . send them back.

I lean against the sink. “Who?” I whisper aloud, frustrated with the obscure warnings.
As I’m waiting for a response, I hear a rustle inside one of the half-closed stalls. I inhale a startled breath and lean down to look under the metal door, careful not to let my hair touch the damp floor.

“Is someone there?”

No answer. Steeling myself, I swing the door open.

A gurgling hiss greets me along with the distorted face of the clown. It’s toy size again and standing on the toilet lid. I screech and stumble back, tripping over my backpack. My elbow knocks the paper towel dispenser open. Squares of brown paper flutter down all around me.

Hopping to the floor, the demented toy scurries after me, razor-sharp teeth bared and snapping. One of its shoes slips on the paper towels and it falls. It crawls toward me instead, never slowing. Heart pounding, I look around for something to use as a weapon—to protect myself from that snarling mouth…

Guys I was excited when I got the chance to be a part of Jordyn and the Caverns of Gloom tour!  I really really liked the first book in the series, simply titled Jordyn and I couldn't wait to see what Tiffany had for us fans in the next installment.  Needless to say, I enjoyed the book and even gave it a 4 unicorn rating!  So, what I'm saying is that you should check this little series out when you have the time!

My Character Interview With Jordyn:
(So I was really excited when I got to sit down and have a chat with the main character of The Daemon Hunter novels herself.  She clues us in to a few of the things that may or may not be coming for us in the next installment and tells us more about the men in her life!)

So Jordyn, on your 5 weeks off on your own, what was your favorite place that you visited?

After everything that happened, I needed to get away to think. I wasn't traveling to site-see. I wanted solace. The beaches in Costa Rica are absolutely mesmerizing. Soft sand with crystal blue warm water. Anyone could lose themselves there like I did.

I just have to ask, can you give us some more details about Anthony?  I mean we know he can create a killer tattoo, but what else can you tell us?

Anthony is a big dude—I mean, big, but gentle as a teddy bear. We're really still getting to know each other. Anthony is one of those don't ask don't tell types of guys. Very private. If you went to party, he'd be the guy in the corner just observing, but not in a creepy way. Because of his size, and how quiet he is, he looks like someone of great importance that you would feel uncomfortable approaching.

Okay, so you get back home and everything is different.  What were your first thoughts on Boon?  He seems like a cool kid.

Boon is way cool. He and I hit it off immediately. Anyone that likes to cut it up a little like he does is okay in my book. It breaks my heart though to think about what Boon had to endure from his father. I have this fantasy that I would like to find his dad and break everyone of his fingers one by one. You don't know how hard it is for me to not actually go do it. At least Boon is in a good place now.

Training, it sounds like it was a bitch, what's the worst injury you've ever gotten?

The worst pain I've endured came when Kale grabbed me and literally burned my skin away to the bone. Then I had to endure the same pain again from Emrys during training. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have an arch angel to heal your injuries. Which by the way, it's freaky to watch your skin growing back right before your eyes.

Can you tell us why you get all mushy inside when Emrys' kisses you?
That jerk can only do that to me because of his abilities. I mean, he is a Soul Trader. They have a way of making people agreeable if you know what I mean. Of course, his looks, hot bod, and that tantalizing tattoo don't hurt. I can't tell him that though. His ego is big enough already.

Speaking of Emrys... tell us something that none of us know about him...

He visits his dead father's grave for every holiday. There is still a lot about Emrys's past I don't know. For some reason, he blames himself for his father's passing. It's like Emrys feels like he is paying for his own past sins by visiting his father's grave.

Do you know where you're going to end up in book three?  Give us a little inside scoop, if you can?

I would like to find out more about the girl whose body I took over when she passed away. Whether or not that happens, I guess we'll have to wait and see.

[Blog Tour: Arrow Of The Mist by Christina Mercer / Review and Giveaway]

When I first read the summary for Arrow of the Mist I got really excited and so I jumped at the chance to get on the blog tour, and lucky for me I did!  I'm excited to share my thoughts on this debut novel from Christina Mercer.  And so now, here comes my review!

Author: Christina Mercer
Series: Arrow of the Mist #1
Pages: 257
Genre: YA, Historical Fiction, Fantasy
Date Published: March 21st 2013
Publisher: Self published
Format Read: eBook provided by author for honest review

-------------------------------------------------------------
Summary:

Terror strikes the Celtic inspired kingdom of Nemetona when barbed roots breach the veil of a forbidden land and poison woodsmen, including 15-year-old Lia’s beloved father. Lia and three others embark on a quest to the forbidden land of Brume to gather ingredients for the cure. But after her elder kinsman is attacked and poisoned, she and her cousin, Wynn, are forced to finish the quest on their own.

Lia relies on her powerful herbal wisdom and the memorized pages of her late grandmother’s Grimoire for guidance through a land of soul-hungry shades, trickster creatures, and uncovered truths about the origin of Brume and her family’s unexpected ties to it. The deeper they trek into the land, the stronger Lia’s untapped gift as a tree mage unfolds. When she discovers the enchanted root’s maker, it forces her to question everything about who she is and what is her destiny. Ultimately she must make a terrible choice: keep fighting to save her father and the people of the lands or join with the power behind the deadly roots to help nature start anew.

My Thoughts:

Arrow of the Mist was an entertaining, quick and well thought out beginning to, what I think, will be an awesome series!  Mercer has a way of working her words in a simple yet interesting way.  Her pacing is wonderful and the story is action packed from beginning to end.  On top of that she has worked together some really interesting characters.

I loved that this book was rooted in Celtic history, though it takes a turn into a fantasy realm, you never really lose the history of the people that the story surrounds.  I found it refreshing.  Speaking of Mercer's fantasy realm, I loved all of the aspects that she wove into her story.  There were wondrous creatures that I had never heard of and others like dwarfs, unicorns, water nymphs and faeries.  Even the creatures that we all know were re imagined in some really spectacular ways.  I enjoyed the fact that I knew what the creatures were, but that Mercer was giving all of them a fresh face.

Arrow of the Mist is also riddled with riddles taken out of Lia's grandma's Grimoire.  Magic plays a key role in the world building of the story and Mercer also gives that aspect a make over.  The mystery elements were hidden inside of the riddles, which was fun.  She rooted it in a realistic world while also letting the magic do its own thing.  Can you tell that I was obsessed with the world building in this book yet?  Because I totally was!  It was dark and evil and light and beautiful all at the same time.  As soon as you step into the land of Brume anything goes and Mercer used that to her advantage!

The characters were also a lot of fun to read about.  Lia is a strong female lead, who also isn't afraid to show us her weaknesses!  I'm a huge fan of main characters like that.  Not only is the book a action packed fantasy story, it's also Lia's coming of age story.  And trust me, she comes back to her home land a completely different person.  The unfolding of her tree mage powers was also fascinating to watch.  Though there is a hunky love interest by the name of Kelvin, he isn't used in much of the novel.  Which I thought was kind of awesome.  You know he's there, but the story focuses on Lia and her cousin Wynn.  Speaking of Wynn, he was pretty amazing himself.  I couldn't have wished for a better partner in crime for Lia.  Reading a book that centered on family was a nice change of pace for me.

Mercer's use of animals and plant life in Arrow of the Mist also brought a certain life to the book.  Hounds, bees, horses and a slew of plant life play a large role in the book and she gave them all the right amount of personality!

All in all I have to say that Mercer has written a solid first novel.  Though I do have to get up on my soap box for second and let you know that I thought that the ending was way to abrupt.  It almost felt like it cut off in the middle of a paragraph to me.  But, that being said I'll be sitting here waiting to see what happens next in book 2!

Rating:
4 Unicorns = Close to perfect!

[It's My Birthday, So We're Partying With My Favorite Book Of The Year]

Guys, did you hear that?
 http://media.tumblr.com/2d63d8eebaa86c521b423318f2e9fe15/tumblr_inline_mnu3obsYX11qz4rgp.gif

Yes, it could have been early fireworks, lit by people who just can't wait till July 4th, but I'm sure that they were for me.  Cause... wait for it...
 http://images.wikia.com/glee/images/6/6c/Birthday.gif

Today is my birthday! (but I already told you that in the title of this post...)
 http://25.media.tumblr.com/b50dc2fbf04edc3182ca762cb6f450fa/tumblr_mnwk2rTJJ31qmmx21o1_500.gif

I'm a quarter of a century old today, so that's kinda weird.  I remember when I thought 25 was old, but here I am, and it doesn't seem so old now.  (Okay, it still kinda does)  But it doesn't matter, because I LOVE birthdays!  So much!  They are some of the coolest things out there, in my opinion!
 http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mcg0dkcGlG1rpx6m6.gif

But enough about me already.  Since none of you will be able to attend my party tonight I figured that I'd throw one on here, one that we can all get excited about and I even invited a special guest!  Cause we all know that parties are cooler when you have a special guest, right?  I can't tell you how much I've come to love book blogging.  This little blog started in February and it just keeps bringing the coolest books and people into my life!  So thanks for rocking so much!  Oh yeah, back to the special guest!

Introducing: Cat Winters (author of In the Shadow of Blackbirds and my favorite read of 2013... so far)

(CM) First thank you Cat for stopping by on my birthday!  It's great to have you here!  So let's start this off.  In the Shadow of Blackbirds is set during World War I, what made you pick that War as part of your setting?
(Cat) First of all, happy birthday! Thank you so much for inviting me to be here to help you celebrate.
I picked World War I because I was extremely fascinated by the history of Spiritualism in the United States. The U.S. Civil War and WWI were two moments in time when séances and spirit photography flourished due to widespread grief. I'm more interested in early-twentieth-century history than the 1860s, so I opted to portray the resurgence of Spiritualism in 1918.

(CM) I didn't really know much about The Spanish Flu, but it plays a large role in your book, what made you want to add that element of doom into the mix?
(Cat) When I dug into 1918 history, the flu emerged as a major factor in people's lives...and it added another explanation for the séance and spirit photography craze of the era. When the average life expectancy suddenly drops to the age of 39 in a year, it makes sense that people would have been desperate for comfort. The more I wrote, the more the flu became almost a character in the novel, breathing down my protagonist's neck. When I read personal accounts of 1918, I noticed people were frustrated that this killer flu sprang up right when they were already worrying about the war, so I wanted to portray the disease as a bully that came out of nowhere and made an already bad situation so much worse.

(CM) Spiritualism also has a huge role in In the Shadow of Blackbirds.  What was your favorite part about researching spirit photographers and the like?
(Cat) Researching Spiritualism was both entertaining and heartbreaking. During the WWI era, fraudulent spirit mediums and photographers who claimed to capture the images of departed loved ones were basically illusionists who were out to capitalize on grief. When we look back at the photographs of "spirits" from back then, it's hard to understand how people could have been fooled by these obviously faked photos of paper-cutout ghosts and people hiding beneath sheets. It's easy to chuckle at their gullibility, but it's also extremely sad to think that mourners were genuinely fooled into believing they were viewing photographs of their deceased relatives. My favorite part of the research was learning the tricks the photographers employed long before the age of Photoshop, but at the back of my head, my heart was always hurting for their victims.

(CM) What came first?  The want to tell a ghost story or the want to write a historical novel?

(Cat) That's a hard question to answer. I've been a fan of both ghost tales and historical fiction since childhood. I fell in love with ghost stories around the age of eight, and when I was about nine, I read my first favorite historical novel: Frances Hodgson Burnett's A Little Princess. I'm drawn to reading books that blend history and ghosts, so I suppose it was natural for me to want to write such a novel.

(CM) Mary Shelley Black!  How'd you come up with adding literature and German culture into the story with a simple name?
(Cat) Mary Shelley Black showed up in my head with her name intact. I don't know why, but that's what she insisted on being called, and it's not always easy to argue with her. Before I even sat down to write the novel, I had been studying the violence and prejudice against German-Americans during WWI, and I learned about the frenzied drive to remove German culture and the German language from the United States. I realized a girl who had been named after the author of Frankenstein--a book with a Swiss German title--would have to be careful about her own name if she discussed its origin out loud. I also felt it would be interesting to give her a family of Swiss German origin. As described in the novel, Swiss immigrants like Mary Shelley's family truly did run dairy farms in the western hills of Portland, Oregon, and anyone with a heritage remotely German would have needed to go the extra mile to prove they were "100% American."
I included a few other nods to Frankenstein throughout In the Shadow of Blackbirds. The book is by no means a retelling of the classic horror novel, but Mary Shelley Black's life is definitely intertwined with Shelley's tale of reanimated life and science.

(CM) In all of your research I'm sure you came across a favorite ghost story from WWI, can you tell us about it?
(Cat) Actually, I didn't come across any ghost tales during my WWI research, although the accounts of haunted human beings who experienced the war were far more chilling than any ghost story. I did a quick check of WWI ghost legends after reading your question, and there are indeed several tales of haunted battle sites and WWI cemeteries in France. I've heard firsthand accounts of people feeling a sense of eeriness at Gettysburg here in the U.S., so I suppose the same would be true at other battlefields across the world, especially ones involving a massive loss of lives.

(CM) Out of all of the characters in your book, which one was your favorite to write?
(Cat) Mary Shelley Black, without a doubt. This book would have been extremely difficult and depressing to write if I didn't pick the right narrator, but seeing this dark, horrific world though Mary Shelley's scientific, optimistic, brutally honest eyes transformed the entire story into something almost magical. I have a soft spot for Stephen, of course, and hope he forgives me for what I put him through in this book. I also thoroughly enjoyed writing Jones and Carlos, two side characters who didn't show up in the novel until a later draft. But if I had to pick just one person, I'd say Mary Shelley is definitely my girl.

(CM) Can you tell us a little bit about your new book?  (You have no idea how excited I am for it!)
(Cat) Thank you for your excitement! That's encouraging to hear as I experience second-book jitters. :) The novel is called The Cure for Dreaming, and it's about a seventeen-year-old girl in 1900 America. Her father is terrified that she's going to turn into a suffragist and a "modern woman," so he hires a talented young hypnotist to remove rebellious, unfeminine thoughts from her head. Naturally, the cure doesn't go quite as planned. The novel will be available from Amulet Books in Fall 2014...and like In the Shadow of Blackbirds, it will contain historical photographs and illustrations.

(CM) Thank you so much for stopping by and helping us celebrate today Cat!

“Gossip Girl meets VC Andrews in this contemporary family saga. Love, lies, and betrayal become the new normal when Anna enters the world of Jack and Lucy Kyser.” –Magan Vernon, international bestselling author of The Only Exception

by Leigh Talbert Moore
Three bad things I learned this year: -People you trust lie, even parents.  -That hot guy, the one who’s totally into you, he might not be the one.  -Things are not always how they appear. Three good things I learned this year: -Best friends are always there for you, even when they’re far away.  -That other hot guy, the one who remembers your birthday, he just might be the one.  -Oh, and things are not always how they appear. Anna Sanders expected an anonymous (and uneventful) senior year until she crossed paths with rich-and-sexy Jack Kyser and his twin sister Lucy. Pulling Anna into their extravagant lifestyle on the Gulf Coast, Lucy pushed Anna outside her comfort zone, and Jack showed her feelings she’d never experienced... Until he mysteriously withdrew. Anna turned to her internship at the city paper and to her old attraction for Julian, a handsome local artist and rising star, for distraction. But both led to her discovery of a decades-old secret closely guarded by the twins’ distant, single father. A secret that could permanently change all their lives. Be watching for Undertow, Book 2 in the Dragonfly series, coming July 18!

Falling in Love Changes Everything…
“C’mon,” Julian said, helping me stand. “Let’s blow off this party and catch a movie or go to Scoops. This isn’t our scene.” I shook my head. “I just really want to go home.” The tears were trying to start again. “Can I just go home now?” “Sure,” he said, holding my cheek. I took a limping step, and he stopped. “Does it hurt to walk?”  My leg was throbbing. I nodded, looking down, and before I realized what was happening, he was lifting me in his arms.  “Julian, wait,” I held his shoulders. “I’m too heavy!”  “It’s okay,” he said, walking on. I sighed and leaned my head against his shoulder. I didn’t feel like fighting. Gentle pressure against my temple, and he’d kissed me. “You’ll get over this,” I heard him say under his breath.

[Blog Tour: Always Remember by Emma Hart. Review/Guest Post/Giveaway]

When I had the chance to hop on the blog tour for Always Remember, I knew that I had to take it.  I've been reading the Memories series by my author pal Emma Hart and this is it's conclusion.  Jen and Bing (I mean Samuel) are my two favorite characters in the series, so I was excited to see that this is their love story.  I was excited to see what ended up happening between them.  Let's get on to the book, shall we?

Author: Emma Hart
Series: Memories #2
Pages: ?
Genre: Mature YA, NA, Contemporary
Date Published: May 13th, 2013
Publisher: Self Published
Format Read: eARC provided by author for honest review

-----------------------------------------------------------
Summary:

How long does it take for a long-distance relationship to break down? Sixteen months.
When Jen and Carl put their relationship to rest after Christmas, Jen’s biggest problem is going back to London ten days earlier than planned – and her ever-present attraction to Samuel ‘Bing’ Edwards.
Bing has no idea why Jen left Devon so fast. All he knows is that he wants her as much as he did the first day he laid eyes on her – so spending time with her while Lexy is still in Devon isn’t exactly a hardship for him. When he finds out she’s single, the only thing on his mind is finishing what they started at his dad’s fiftieth birthday party.
Feelings that have been a long time building between the two explode, and they both find themselves sucked into an easy yet passionate relationship, with Bing determined to prove to Jen that she’s it for him. That she is The One.
But in a city like London, the odds are stacked against them, and there’s always that one person ready to stir things up… And Jen doesn’t know how much of that she can take – even for the guy she loves more deeply than she ever imagined, and eventually she breaks.
Bing isn’t down with that. He wants Jen, and he wants her by his side for good.

Jennifer Mason must learn that Samuel Edwards doesn’t do giving up. Especially not when his forever girl is involved.

My Thoughts:

I was excited to dig into Always Remember, primarily because it was going to be all about Jen and Bing.  They have been some of my favorite characters in this series ever since Never Forget and I was so excited to see what Emma Hart had in store for these two.

These kids are two of the snarkiest and funniest/rudest people out there.  There is something completely hilarious about how Jen and Bing interact that will always put a smile on my face.  They both swear like sailors and they both are complete wrecks, but that, oddly is a large part of their charm.  I just love watching these two do their thing.  Add in some familiar faces from the other two books in the series and you get to watch them interact with even more people.  Which is always a good time!

I do feel like the conflict that was brought up in this book wasn't extremely strong.  It tried to be, but it just didn't stand out to me.  I didn't know what I thought the conflict would be, but I thought it would be more than a bleach blonde who is still hung up on Bing.  Hart had such a touching conflict in her first novel and female getting in the way of Jen and Bing just didn't really cut it for me.

I will state right here that this book is the steamiest out of all of the Memories series.  Meaning that it's pretty dang steamy.  In a way I thought that it might have focused on the sex a little too much.  Yes the sex filled banter is funny between Bing and Jen, but it's the moments when that isn't really in the forefront that these characters shine.

I won't tell you what happens in the end, but I thought that it was perfect for the story and I liked how Granny snuck back in to the story, even if it was in a little way.  All in all this was a great way to end a fun NA series!

Rating:
3 Unicorns = I liked it a lot but it had it's issues!

Guest Post With Emma Hart About Her Favorite British Things!

  1. Fish and chips. You’ve never had it until you’ve had it from a chip shop and eaten it on the seafront. Blackpool is the best place for that!
  2. Stick of rock. For those of you not familiar with the wonderful thing that is a stick of rock – it’s a hard candy that comes in bright colours and patterns, and also has words running through the middle of the stick. It’s a seaside thing, and they usually have the place name in the middle!
  3. Roast dinner. British roast dinners win hands down. Nowhere does them like we do. And we have…
  4. Yorkshire pudding. It’s not actually a pudding, but something so yum it should have its own spot. It goes with a roast dinner, so if you don’t know it, go and Google a recipe and MAKE IT IMMEDIATELY.
  5. London. I’ve only been once – something I hope to rectify soon – but thanks to a wrong turn we ended up travelling through the city center and I loved it.
  6. “Bloody hell!” – as in the saying. I say it way too much…
  7. The weather. Because when all else fails, we Brits love to discuss the weather.
