When I heard about this blog tour and this novella I knew that I had to get in on the party.  I mean it has a unicorn on the cover for crying out loud!  So, I'll be reviewing the book and then at the end you can win some cool bookmarks!  Let's get down to business!

Summary:

Valentine’s Day.

And my 21st birthday.

Whoop-de-doo.

Just another college day full of classes and more homework than is humanly possible.

…until Jason, my best-friend-since-
kindergarten, shows up to take me out for the day.

Like old times: the two of us on a wacky adventure, playing hooky from real life. With his lopsided grin and tickets to a circus full of misfits and monsters, he introduces me to a whole new world—one full of magic and mystery—and turns my reality upside down.

Except nothing goes as planned, and we end up running through the city to find a missing siren before someone brews a love potion with her blood.

Sirens and love potions, witches and elves, and Valentine kisses. Nothing will be the same for me again.

My Thoughts:

Playing Hooky is a novella that I enjoyed.  You had to let go of what you think reality is and just go with the flow for 100 pages.  That's not something I have an issue doing.  But the story itself had some issues because of the amount of time that the author had to tell the story.  That's really my only complaint.  That the story seemed rushed in sections because of the length restrictions.  Which as we all know can come with the territory of novellas.  That being said. This first little installment piqued my interest and I want to know the answers to some of the problems that were introduced here.

Emma and Jason relationship was fun to watch.  They have always been best friends and dating other people when one of them is single and so they have never dated.  They don't even know if they want to date?  But the spark is there and it keeps the readers on their toes the whole time.  I adored their witty banter and Emma was one heck of a fire cracker.

I have to give it to Webb for creating some really awesome mythological secondary characters that you actually got to know in your short time with them.  In my opinion this is where she excelled.  Sure the new adult romance was cute, but her imagery and characters that made up the crazy circus where her strong suit.  The unicorns that purr like kittens, the dwarf with a bad attitude, the seemingly young elf were all so well done.  And the even smaller characters of the witch, the hunter and the siren still packed their own unique punch.
The actual story line with the love potion was a little strange and I wasn't quite sure that it went the direction that I would have wanted.  That being said, Webb committed to an idea and saw it all the way through.
This is an interesting New Adult book with lots of new things thrown together.  If you want to be swept up in some really awesome imagery, this just might be the quick little book you've been looking for.

About The Author:

Leaving the house to go to school, I had schoolbooks spilling out of one hand, the other holding my place in a Nancy Drew novel, and bunny slippers still on my feet. My mom was a wee bit upset.

I haven't changed much. Still always have a book (or two) in my hand or creating stories in my head, and although I don't have any bunny slippers, I love writing in my jammies and snuggly slipper socks.

When I grow up (maybe a hundred years from now), I'd like to be a superhero, but for now, saving the day, one page at a time, suits me just fine.

With my husband TJ (my own cuddly werewolf), I home-school our three girls, who keep us busy with art, science projects, books to read, dance classes, and walks about the park.

Unicorns that purr whuuuuuut is this magic?? So cool! It sounds like this one was pretty good, I'm happy that it left you wanting to read more in the series. I like the cover a lot and now that I know there are some magical inclusions (I had NO idea) I am definitely curious about this one.
