[Tope Ten Tuesday #9: Words Or Topics That Make Me Pick Up A Book]

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly linkup hosted by The Broke And The Bookish!

Without a doubt this weeks TTT theme reminds me of a scene from the movie musical (which is now on Broadway) Newsies.  The scene is one in which the newspaper guys are talking about what words sell headlines and I think that it's the same for books!  It's true that really catchy titles or interesting words in the summary of a book will make sure that you pick it up.  Sadly, I couldn't find the scene that I am talking about, but I figured that I would share one of my favorite songs from the live musical version (which I still haven't seen) with all of you.  Oh, and can I dedicate it to Eileen?  She knows why.

And back to the words or topics that I will always read!

My Top Ten Words Or Topics That Will Force Choke Me Into Reading A Book
(please tell me we have Star Wars fans out there?)

Anything Music Related: If the book has to do with music, chances are I will pick it up.  There is only one thing that I love as much as reading and traveling and that is music.  Give me a book with a plot line centered around it and I'll eat it up!

Travel: Speaking of travel I love books that have to do with it.  Though I have to admit that I find travel books fairly boring.  Give me a book full of adventure that is caused by heading to an unknown place and I'm all in.  The most exciting and realistically unrealistic things happen while going somewhere you don't know and where no one knows you.

Ghosts:  Give me a good ghost story and I'll happily sit in the corner reading it.  I love to be scared and I find that there are a lot of books out there that try to creep me out, but it doesn't always work out that way.  So if you know of some really freaky books, let me know?!

Dead People:  Now I know what you're thinking, you're thinking "aren't ghosts dead people?"  You would be correct, but sometimes a good creepy story has to do with a dead person who isn't a ghost.  Maybe they are in hell and dead, but not a ghost.  Or it's a mystery surrounding a dead person.

Fairy Tale Retellings:  I'm a sucker for a good fairy tale retelling.  I think I like them because they are built on something that you grew up with, but they are different then what you know.  I like all kinds.  Ones that are similar to the original, ones that almost have nothing to do with the original and ones that blend more than one together.

War:  I love a good book that is set during war time.  Give me some historical fiction about World War I or World War II and it'll keep me busy for awhile!  I've read a lot of them, so when a new one comes out I get really excited.

Paranormal:  When I read I like my books to have a sense of something strange.  Not that I don't enjoy contemporary, it's just that I live a contemporary life and I like to pulled into a world that I don't know when I read.  It seems that it's easy to add a paranormal element to any sort of book... contemporary, historical and so on.

Standalone:  Series books are awesome, but when I can just sit down and read a complete novel with a beginning, middle and end I get a lot of pleasure out of it.  Chances are that a brilliant standalone will stay in my mind longer than a favorite series (ok this isn't always true, but sometimes).

Male POV:  I think that when a male POV is featured and done really well that it can have a huge impact on the reader!  I'm supremely picky about male voices though.  This could be because I grew up with 4 brothers and a handful of guy friends.  If I can't believe that your main character is a guy, you've got an issue.

Cliff Hangers:  When I read a series I love a good cliff hanger!  I know not everyone shares my sentiments on this, but I can't help myself.  Every once in awhile I've been known to be a fan of a standalone with a cliff hanger ending as well.  Sometimes I like to be kept guessing.  Though there are times when I definitely don't.

Well there's my list!  What's on yours?  I wanna know.  Leave your link below or tell me in the comments!

So many of my favorite books have a big music theme so I totally agree with that choice! Great list!

Read In The Shadow of Blackbirds. It was amazing! It has ghosts and dead people and war and it's a standalone. And did I mention that it's amazing? :)

Have you read Just Listen? It's got music and its a standalone. I love Sarah Dessens books. What's your favorite ghost book? I've only read Anna Dressed in Blood and I didn't really like it, but I'm wanting to try another one.
