 My Thoughts:

An Open Letter To The Perilous Sea,

Okay, so I liked you. You were a very good middle book in my opinion, though I still had some issues with you. Like the first book before you, I had a hard time getting into you, I found parts of you boring, and yet, by the end, I was crying and cheering and wanting to know what happens next. I'm not sure what it is about you books, but in the end I always end up enjoying you.

The only books I've read by Sherry Thomas are the ones in this trilogy. I'm saying this because I had the same issues with both books. Something about her pacing and I don't mix well. It's not to say that these books aren't fabulously written, because they are. It's more the fact that it takes me so long to really get into her world. I was hoping that that wouldn't be the case with The Perilous Sea, but it was. I still struggled with it, even though I was interested in what was going on, this book had a hard time keeping my attention in the beginning. Then in the middle, I couldn't put it down till I finished.

Thomas tells her story a little different in this second installment and I loved what she did. She gave us two plot lines to see the story through. One that consisted of Fairfax and Titus while they were in school and one where they were in the middle of the desert with no memory of who they are. It was fun to see both plot lines intersect and create a full story. I also happened to enjoy the high action of the desert scenes. They kept me fully interested in what I was reading, while some of the Eton antics seemed a bit boring.

The Perilous Sea was much more of mystery novel than The Burning Sky (at least from what I can remember). There are clues everywhere for Titus and Fairfax to find and they all lead to the same messed up conclusion. I found that some of the details Thomas wove into the story seemed a bit muddled and some of the characters reactions to the happenings in the book didn't seem as heightened as they needed to be. One instance of a Fairfax reaction to something that happens near the end of the book had me underwhelmed. You would think that it would have left her much more devastated than it did. (Sorry for being vague, I don't want to give anything away) For some reason this really bothered me. And I wished that some of the revelations would have held more weight with the characters.

As always Fairfax and Titus are adorable! If there is one thing that Thomas is really good at, it's the witty banter that she creates between these two! I love their relationship and even though there are few bumps in the road they handle it well. 

Thomas also chooses to highlight a few more of the boys in Eton and I liked getting to know them better. Though I still can't believe that none of them realize that Fairfax isn't a dude...

All in all this is a solid middle book and even though it might take me ages, you bet that I'll be reading the finale as soon as I can get my hands on it.

I really liked The Burning Sky, a lot.  It had it's issues, but I can't wait to catch up with characters again and see what they're up to.  This book sounds so good and I'm glad that Thomas is sticking to her gender bending plot as well!  Bring it!

My Thoughts:

I don't even know how to review this book.  To say that it was gradual reading experience would be an understatement.  It was like a long slow climb.  In the beginning you have no idea why the hell your not just turning around and throwing in the towel, but then you get to the top of the mountain and the view is so awesome that your glad you completed it.  To be completely honest I wanted to put this book down till about the 20% mark.  (I was reading an eARC)  I was bored and disconnected from the story.  I liked all of the elements, but I was just plain bored.  Then about 25% I started to love the characters and from there on out I loved this book.   

I loved the world building and character development in these pages, but on the other hand, I think that was also it's downfall for me.  I'll be the first to admit that this book went great places, but it started out extremely flat.  I think, had the characters started more fleshed out, I would have been more connected from the start.  Cause like I said when we got to the all boys boarding school and The Burning Sky turned into "She's the Man" (remember that movie?) with magic, I was hooked!  Plus, it made me wonder why I had never thought of that.  It was pretty much the best idea ever.  But sadly, the first bit of the book was not as brilliant as the rest of it and I didn't care about the characters at all till later on. 

The world building in this book was superb.  Thomas has so many layers in her tale weaving that you got to see so many places.  Magical places with princes and mages and dragons and unicorns, England in the late 1880's and even the pages of a magical training book.  She left so many magnificent details about all of these places on the pages that it pulled you right into the world she was creating.  And the way they all blended together was awesome to behold!  

I also have to admit that I really loved the voice that Thomas chose to use in telling her story.  The whole duel point of view told in third person, totally worked for me and made the flow of the story work.

Now, I've already talked a little bit about the characters in this book, so I'm not going to repeat myself, but rather talk about the characters once they had won me over.  Iolanthe was hilarious!  Seriously as soon as she started going to that all boys boarding school and filling Archer's shoes, I fell in love with her personality.  Thomas gave her the perfect pairing of masculine and feminine traits.  She could shoot off a crude school boy joke and also have moments of girlishness.  She was open and vulnerable, but also blocked off and self assured.  Titus grew on me.  He didn't seem like the nicest guy and he kept me guessing, but I came to like what he had to put out in the world.  He was charismatic and also a bit wounded.  He also had two roles to fill, a cold ruler and a boy who knew that he had to follow his destiny and do anything within his power to make that happen.

The romance was sweet and unique.  It's not normally that a romance stems from a friendship, but this one was drenched in it.  It made all of Iolanthe and Titus's interactions fun to watch as the navigated their relationship.  I think that the setting of the boys school and the prophecies surrounding these two really added to the romance.

I'd love to give this book  a 4 unicorn rating, but I just can't do it, cause I would have given the first quarter no more than 2 stars.  This forced me to put the two together and in the end I've handed it a 3.5 unicorn rating.  (I'm telling you this cause we all know half of a unicorn head would look weird as all get out)  So even though this book started out rough for me, I can say that, after completing this book, I'm a fan of this series and I can't wait to see what happens in book 2!

This one sounds epic!  That's it.  It sounds like it's an epic clash to the death, but with this being a series, I guess we can already guess how that ends up.  Unless we all get a surprise ending?  Who knows.  My only complaint with this book is that it's going to take forever to come out.
